Epizyme moving HQ to Vassar Street

Cambridge biotech Epizyme Inc. plans to move its headquarters from Memorial Drive to 325 Vassar Street, doubling its space. Boston real estate firm Richards Barry Joyce & Partners said today that Epizyme signed a lease for 18,396 sq ft with BioMed Realty Trust Inc. Epizyme, which is currently headquartered at 840 Memorial Drive, plans to move into the new space in April. The new facility is designed as a Universal Flex Lab building, a concept that allows lab space, offices and conference rooms to be reconfigured easily on an as-needed basis without heavy construction expenses. In January, Epizyme entered into a cancer therapeutics development and commercialization alliance with GlaxoSmithKline worth potentially more than $630 million in milestone payments. The agreement calls for Epizyme to conduct research into small molecule therapeutics that target a class of epigenetic enzymes, called histone methyltransferases (HMTs), in treating cancer. Epizyme will be responsible for the research of epigenetic enzymes, while GlaxoSmithKline will cover development and commercialization of the epigenetic enzymes, which may enable personalized cancer and disease treatment. According to Richard Barry Joyce, Epizyme is the first tenant signed by BioMed Realty Trust at the Vassar Street building since its redevelopment as a Universal Flex Lab building. Richards Barry Joyce’s Jon Varholak and Eric Smith represented Epizyme in the transaction. The same real estate firm’s Steven Purpura represented BioMed Realty Trust.
